The Lenses

Ways of Noticing

The lenses we read with.

Every time we open a story, we’re bringing something with us.

Our experiences. Our questions. Our hopes. Our fears.

The lenses we read through shape what we notice.

Over the years, we’ve found a handful of perspectives that help us slow down, pay attention, and make meaning from the stories we love. Some come from psychology, some from spirituality, some from coaching, and some have been practiced for centuries. Together, they’ve become part of the practice we share each week in the Room.

We didn’t create these frameworks. We’ve simply found that they work beautifully together.

You don’t need to know anything about these lenses before listening. We’ll introduce them naturally throughout the podcast. If one sparks your curiosity, you’re invited to keep exploring here.

Story as Sacred Practice

Everything begins with story.

We believe stories can be more than entertainment. They can become mirrors that help us better understand ourselves, our relationships, and the lives we’re living.

Instead of asking, “What did the author intend?” we often ask, “Why did this part stay with me?” That simple shift opens the door to reflection.

Tarot & Oracle

Every week, we pair the chapter with one tarot card and one oracle card.

Together, they create a shared theme that invites us into the story with fresh eyes and open curiosity. The cards don’t tell us what to think, nor do they predict the future. They simply help us ask better questions.

For us, tarot and oracle are less about certainty and more about paying attention.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Have you ever found yourself saying, “Part of me wants this…” or “Another part of me is afraid.”?

IFS begins with the idea that those aren’t just figures of speech. Each of us is made up of many different parts, all trying to help us in their own way.

Instead of judging those parts, we learn to approach them with curiosity and compassion. It has completely changed the way we understand both fictional characters and ourselves.

Somatic Practice

Our bodies are constantly giving us information.

Sometimes we feel it as tension. Sometimes as ease. Sometimes as a quiet knowing that doesn’t quite have words yet.

Somatic practices help us reconnect with that wisdom. They remind us that insight isn’t only something we think. It’s also something we feel. That’s why every visit to the Room begins with a grounding practice. We want to arrive with our whole selves.

Trauma-Informed Practice

One question has transformed the way we read stories: “What happened to this person?”

A trauma-informed lens invites us to replace judgment with curiosity. It doesn’t excuse harmful behavior, but it helps us understand the experiences that may have shaped it.

Practicing that kind of compassion with fictional characters makes it easier to extend it to ourselves and the people around us.

Synchronicity

Have you ever had the feeling that life was trying to get your attention?

Maybe a conversation echoed something you had just read. Maybe a symbol kept appearing throughout your week. Maybe a chapter arrived at exactly the right moment.

We call those moments synchronicities.

Whether you understand them as meaningful coincidence, psychology, spirituality, or simply paying closer attention, they invite us to notice patterns we might have otherwise missed.

The Heroine’s Journey

Many stories teach us how to overcome obstacles.

The Heroine’s Journey asks a different question: “How do I find my way back to myself?”

This framework reminds us that transformation isn’t always about becoming someone new. Sometimes it’s about remembering who we’ve been all along.

It’s a perspective that quietly shapes many of the conversations we have in the Room.

Coaching

Neither of us believes our job is to tell you what something means.

Our coaching backgrounds have taught us that meaningful questions often create more lasting change than quick answers.

That’s why you’ll hear us wondering out loud, exploring different possibilities, and allowing space for uncertainty. We trust that you’re the expert on your own life.

One Story, Many Lenses

No single lens can fully capture what it means to be human.

Each one helps us notice something different. Sometimes one lens brings a chapter into focus. Sometimes another helps us understand ourselves in a new way.

We don’t believe the magic lives in any one framework.

We think it happens in the conversation between them, and in what becomes possible when we bring our own experiences into the Room.

Learning as We Go

You don’t need to master any of these ideas before you listen. Bring your questions, your curiosity, and the parts of yourself that are still figuring things out.

We’ll do the same.
